Description & Mechanism
Livagen (KEDA) is studied in vitro as a chromatin-directed short-peptide probe. In lymphocyte and hepatocyte cultures it has been reported to induce chromatin decondensation (de-heterochromatinisation), activating ribosomal genes and releasing genes repressed by age-related condensation of euchromatic regions, used experimentally to study gene-expression and protein-synthesis programmes in cells from aged donors.
Within the Khavinson model it is a tool for probing chromatin-level transcriptional regulation in immune and hepatic cell systems, including comparative young-versus-old culture studies. Observed effects depend on concentration, model system and exposure conditions.
Applications in Research
- In-vitro lymphocyte chromatin-activation and ribosomal-gene studies
- Hepatocyte gene-expression and protein-synthesis research
- Preclinical models of cellular aging (cell culture and rodent)
- Reference probe for short-peptide transcriptional regulation

Handling, Reconstitution & Stability
- Weigh under dry conditions; peptide is hygroscopic
- Reconstitute in sterile water or appropriate buffered aqueous solution depending on assay requirements
- Avoid vigorous agitation during dissolution
- Filter sterilize if required (e.g. 0.22 µm) prior to use
- Aliquot and store reconstituted solutions at –20 °C or below to minimise degradation
- Avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles
Precautions & Notes
- Experimental behaviour is dependent on concentration, model system and exposure conditions
- Appropriate experimental controls are recommended
- Prolonged exposure to light, elevated temperature or aqueous environments may reduce stability
- Intended strictly for laboratory research use; not for human or veterinary application
