Description & Mechanism

P-21 (also designated P021) is a synthetic small molecule peptide derived from ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF). It is used in experimental research to investigate neurogenesis, cognitive function, and neurotrophic signalling pathways. P-21 is designed to mimic the neurotrophic properties of CNTF while possessing improved pharmacokinetic characteristics, including blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability.

In biochemical and cellular research systems, P-21 has been shown to promote neurogenesis, particularly in the dentate gyrus region of the hippocampus. Experimental studies examine its effects on neural progenitor cell proliferation, synaptic plasticity, and cognitive function in various model systems.
